Bontebok Taxidermy FAQ's

What is the difference between a Bontebok and a Blesbok?

While bontebok and blesbok are similar South African antelopes, their appearance and habitats differ significantly. Bontebok have darker coats with a sharply contrasted white facial blaze, and they can be found in coastal fynbos. Blesbok, on the other hand, are lighter (often tan or light brown) with a white face blaze.

Are Bontebok endangered?

While Bontebok have faced major threat, the recent down grading of Bontebok by CITES is a huge win for land owners and hunting conservation. This proves that well regulated hunting does and has benifited the species recovery and success. In the early 20th century, Bontebok nearly faced extinction due to aggressive overhunting and habitat loss. With just 17 individuals left at the time, significant conservation efforts had to be made. The establishment of Bontebok National Park in 1931 was one of the most notable conservation efforts made to protect this species. Since then, the population has seen a positive growth; however, they still face threats that could jeopardise these efforts.

Where do Bontebok live?

Historically, these animals were often found along coastal plains or open grasslands. However, due to major investment and conservation efforts by private land owners and hunting associations. Bontebok can be found in far wider areas across South Africa.

Where does the name Bontebok come from?
